About this Show

Sandpoint open market with season one cast.

Rise of the Runelords is a Pathfinder Adventure Path by Paizo Publishing.

From the idyllically peaceful coastal town of Sandpoint to an ancient lost city at the top of the world, Rise of the Runelords takes a party of adventurers from 1st to over 15th level and delves into the mysteries of Varisia's ancient past. Millennia ago, the powerful empire of Thassilon ruled the land, dominated by despotic runelords who maintained their power through harnessing the power of rune magic. Thought gone forever, the workings of Thassilon are not so far beneath the surface and one of the runelords plans a return to power. Only the brave adventurers stand in his way.

Rise of the Runelords was the first adventure path released in the Pathfinder Adventure Path line and debuted in August 2007. Written by James Jacobs, Richard Pett, Nicolas Logue, Wolfgang Baur, Stephen S. Greer, and Greg A. Vaughan, the six-part adventure arc has been released in individual Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes, and compiled into an updated anniversary edition hardcover.

Learn more about Taury
character portrait of Taury

Taury appears to be a Shoanti Human Female of 40 years standing 5' 10" and weighing aproximately 110 lb.

Dark tanned skin, youthful in age but a weathered and a vaguely sickly face making her look older than she is. Her eyes are both bloodshot and have cataracts covering the pupil and much of the iris, to a milky white, the right eye has a hint of a sky blue remaining in the iris. Blue warpaint on either side of the face and down either side of the the neck similar to Celtic warpaint. Typically wears an apathetic or smoulderingly grumpy expression. Her hair is Viking like; black with hints of white in patches as if it’s fading to grey or unnaturally bleaching white. Shaved sides with a long undecorated braid/plait on top stretching down the back,

She has a muscular build and wears a dark green non-hooded cloak with a pelt of thick animal furs around the collar and shoulders. She carries a short-bow and an arrow quiver as well as an ornate wooden staff (switch scythe) with a battle motif engraved into its iron caps.

Her magic manifests as a trail of ghostly grey mist which erupts from her lips as she murmurs the incantations. Her milk white eyes become pools of black and grey mist momentarily. The ghostly thin haze swirls slowly morphing into dark shadowy cloud-like shapes of figures or objects the spell is evoking. Depending on the spell cast, this ghostly manifestation pushes itself around her fingers billowing into its varying forms and further slithering around her switchsythe handle. Her voice while muttering these incantations is a faint and haunting whisper as if another entity from within is speaking, using her as its mouthpiece.

character portrait of Markus

Markus appears to be a Chelaxian/Azlanti Human male of 20 years standing 5' 7" and weighing aproximately 135 lb.

Dark black hair, kept moderately short; long enough that the wind can move it but short enough that when that inevitably happens, it doesn't get in his eyes. Sharp angular cheekbones and features. Purplish blue eyes and a skin tone that's not quite bronze, a bit paler than that. Often wears a super wide brim bucket hat.

He wears a common traveler's ourfit with a heavy duty armored long coat and is carrying an overstuffed backpack.

Quiet_Geek (He/Him) is based in the UK and very much a computer geek. VicoftheVoid

Learn more about Morana
character portrait of Morana

Morana appears to be a Varisian Human female of 30 years standing 5' 6" and weighing aproximately 120 lb.

Ruby colored eyes, smooth skin with a slightly orange tint to it and long metallic orange hair with darker red accents. She wears an expression of innocence with a slight smirk. Her typical head covering is the hood of her cloak, mostly simple and black but with silver and red accents.

She's thin, but not quite frail. Her gear is mostly hidden by her cloak and robes, which like the hood are black with silver and red accented trim. She carries a doll visably at her hip, which looks basically like a miniature version of her, but obviously not as detailed. It doesn't look like a quality piece appearing homemade, though from odd materials, and it has an almost disturbing look to it. There's something off-putting about it as if it were a voodoo doll crossed with a rag-doll. Her other noticeably visible gear is a baldric with several small pouches and 6 daggers tucked into it across her chest. The various pouches are full of spell components for her to easily reach. Her body language is prodominantly that of focus combined with mild disinterest, but her wide-eyed innocent look and slight smirk almost never leave her face. Her most frequent mannerism is a slight head tilt and raising of her eyebrows, as though she's trying to understand just what someone is trying to say, or thinking of a sarcastic reply.

Her magic manifestion is extremely focused around her doll, with her raising it to eye level as energy flows from her, into it, and the spell seems to almost cast from it rather than her. Sometimes a flash of a spirit can be seen forming around the doll as it does, with its arms extended in front of it like a reflection of her.

Learn more about Fenwarin
character portrait of Fenwarin

Fenwarin appears to be a Elven male of 20 years standing 5' 7" and weighing aproximately 105

Gaunt face with a thin nose. No facial hair whatsoever. Rather large pointy ears, with a ring on the outer rim of the left ear. Medium-thick eyebrows that curve alongside his emerald green eyes, straight blonde hair that cascade down beside the ears and end just past the shoulders. Fair skin, calm attitude/demeanor and docile-looking. No scars and no head accessories, prefers hoods if covering his head at all.

Thin build with slumped shoulders wearing leather boots and tan cloth pants. A greenish tunic with a brown cloth harness over that. A leather satchel rarely leaves his side. The clothes are far from pristine. He uses a quarterstaff as a walking stick. Body language shows slight uncertainty. Mannerism is careful and he looks approachable.

Fen raises one hand up in a claw-like manner faced upwards while manifesting the spell he's about to cast and moves his fingers as if to balance the spell-casting before it launches.

IrishRabbi

Learn more about Loyal
character portrait of Loyal

Loyal appears to be a Chelaxian male of 20 years standing 5' 8" and weighing aproximately 140 lb.

Red-Orange eyes flicker under eyebrows furrowed with concern. Forest-green skin and shoulder length thick black wavy hair that is a little unruly. Jet-black horns like those of a young yak focused forward more than to the sides with the points curling up slightly from just above eye level. Often wearing a hood that covers head and horns, but some of the hair sticks out and helps hide the horns in the shadow of the hood. He has a cloth mask that covers his face, up to his nose that is part of the robes. He wears this mask in combination with the hood to avoid prying eyes from staring at his unusual complexion.

Having a relatively lithe build, though his clothing adds an appearance of some bulk as the layered robes bunch up with his movement. He wears leather armor underneath a series of predominantly white robes with black accents and trims. The robes have several pockets for the storage of alchemical items. He wears leather gloves and boots and has a large backpack with several tinctures, potions, etc strapped to the outside of the pack for easy access. A crossbow and a few daggers are strapped to backpack amidst the alchemical reagents. He has bandages that wrap around his abdomen under his robes and armor that are covering up a serious wound. He is often apprehensive; slouched over from the heavy backpack he carries.

His magic manifests through the potions he makes, which don’t give off too much of a magical aura apart from a glow. However, when he uses "Spirit Share" to transfer the effects of those potions to his allies, the magic of the potion passes through his arm and hand with glowing wisps. Traveling the length of his arm and hand into the ally, the color of the wisps varies with which potion is being transferred, most commonly in blues and greens. His bombs manifest more alchemically using fire-based bombs, which appear as a sticky orange/red liquid within globe-like glass vials that are lobbed at enemies. More recently he has begun using acid-based bombs, which manifest as a bubbling, green, chemically reactive viscous liquid in the same glass vials.

Koro

Learn more about Ishmael
character portrait of Ishmael

Ishmael appears to be a Taldan Human male of 30 years standing 6' and weighing aproximately 140 lb.

Two lifeless eyes like glinting pale blue pools with a thousand yard stare that seems out of place hollowed into somewhat youthful facial features, coupled with his warm beige skin tone. He has a sharp thin jaw and cheekbones typical of noble stature, atop his head a long side swept undercut; pearlescent in colour. Often he dons a leather pork pie hat and clearly visible under the brim, his ears have silver and lake blue coloured piercings that appear like ice shards. His expression is most commonly a thousand yard stare with a generally aloof nature unless riled.

His physique appears light and thin, though this is largely hidden under several layers of loosely fitting clothing. The most notable of these is his outer Crombie coat of coal black, styled in a military like fashion with bars and shoulder cords adorned in silver, echoing this silver are the buttons which are small ornate snowflakes. Often worn unbuttoned, beneath the coat reveals the inner lining to be vibrant blue with an accompanying waistcoat. This subtly embroidered burgundy waistcoat features a single silver Albert chain attached to a pocket watch with a trinket that appears to be an ampoule perpetually frosted over in an unnatural fashion. His undershirt is a simple violet purple tucked into a dark brown leather belt which tightly affixes a pair of black slacks. Worn over his shoulders draped down over his coat is a decadent scarf of sapphire with regal embroidery made of velvet. Accenting his belt is a pair of weathered cognac leather lace-up ankle boots.

His magic manifests in combat primarily by channeling spells through his sword. However spells cast from his fingers manifest in a distorted green energy, which seeps into objects like a toxin and momentarily de-saturates its colour while warping and weakening its shape as if draining it of life and imbuing it with a necrose infection.

Learn more about Walks With Birds
character portrait of Walks With Birds

Walks With Birds appears to be a Human male of 30 years standing 6' 4" and weighing aproximately 210 lb.

His face is stern but neutral with a look that seeks to learn more about all he sees. His intense expression and dark eyes can be off putting to many at first glance. His head and body are almost hairless though the most recognizable thing about him is his plethora of tattoos. Almost every inch of flesh is covered depicting various events in his life including loss, perseverance, and bonds forged. These usually take the iconography of various giants and large beasts. Tribal symbology serves to connect the many tats and tell stories to the keen observer. Among the jumble of tattoos are various straight lines of thick scar tissue all over his body. The scars often form rectangles of various sizes that belie various mutilations that have long since tried to heal.

His clothing is sparse with hide leather pants, no shirt, and armor that looks like a shoulder brace coming down to the elbow while covering the pecs but leaving the abdomen visible. The opposing shoulder has more thorough covering down his arm to his wrist. In battle, he often adorns silver warpaint in the form of a palm over his face that has been drug down the length of his neck. Light jewelry adornments can be seen in the way of a couple bone piercings on his ears, a tribal necklace of beads and raven skulls, and a metal headband. Contrasting sharply with his rugged and earthy look are a pair of nearly pristine white gloves bearing his veneration to the vulture totem of his tribe. On his belt is also a pouch containing spell components and some utilitarian pockets. His armaments include the iconic Shoanti earthbreaker, a slung long bow over the shoulder with arrows on one hip, and a dagger on the other. He has a backpack with many patches and trophies from his travels and the peoples he's encountered as well as various pockets and items for wilderness survival. A canny observer will note the lack of anything having to do with Kaer Maga or Korvosa while most other regions and major groups in Varisia having some representation. He also wears a cloak with a hood along with a sturdy pair of boots.

His flashier magic takes on the aspects of elementals inherent to the effect. Others provoke manipulations of his flesh to take on a bark-like or rocky appearance. A common daily ritual encompasses his head with a constantly shifting set of vines living just under the skin like dense undergrowth. When enraged, his blood vessels take on an obvious red outline that visibly pulse with his heartbeat.

Want to play this game, or use the setting?

We are using the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition on Roll20 as well as many other official Paizo Pathfinder supplements such as the Beginner Box for side missions or world-building flavor.

The land of Varisia is among the most heavily detailed regions in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting. GMs seeking more information on the area to enrich their games, as well as players who want to tie their characters more closely to the people and places of this rugged frontier, have a wealth of options.

Aside from the Inner Sea World Guide and other Adventure Paths set in this region (Curse of the Crimson Throne, Second Darkness, and Jade Regent to name a few) — the city of Magnimar is thoroughly detailed in Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Magnimar, City of Monuments and Pathfinder Tales: Blood of the City. Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Lost Kingdoms and Giants Revisited also take an expansive look at the ancient secrets and soldiers of the Thassilonian empire. There are numerous official game aids to heighten your game experience as well. The greatest tools available to any GM running Rise of the Runelords are the messageboards at Paizo.com, where the collected experiences, suggestions, and embellishments of hundreds of GMs await.

Players interested in learning more should also checkout Paizo.com for the free Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition Player's Guide PDF, packed full of class-related suggestions, local details, and new traits to help tie characters to Sandpoint and prepare them for the challenges of this Adventure Path. Pathfinder Player Companion: Varisia, Birthplace of Legends also includes a player-friendly overview of the region, details on its unique cultures, and options for characters of every class. Finally the Character traits on pages 330-331 of the Advanced Player's Guide are specifically tailored to appeal to players who start their adventuring careers in Sandpoint, and having characters who are tied to the town from the start will only increase their desires to protect it from goblins, giants, dragons, and ancient unfathomably powerful runelords!
